I think I have a handle on the non-cover band attitude problem. You guys that don't like cover bands, more power to you. What you don't get is this: musicians are a very small segment of society at large. Nobody cares what a musician wants to hear except other musicians. The people who have money to spend on going to hear live music don't give a rats patootie about what musicians like, they want what THEY like. The public is just not interested in hearing tunes they don't know when they go out to dance and party and have fun. Until you come to grips with that basic fact, you will be underpaid. When you figure it all out, you can either separate your business from your art, or find a way to enjoy interpolating yourself and your style into other's tunes, or stay underemployed, undervalued and underpaid.
Remember, nobody cares what YOU like to listen to. They care about what THEY want to hear.

First off, the numbers you quote in terms of money are wildly optimistic. 200$ for an unknown band in a bar on a Tuesday? The real number is more like 20 dollars, if you get a dime. The other thing is, I know I'm on the liberal fringe but I really much prefer not to hear songs I've heard a hundred times on the radio. I do understand that I'm greatly outnumbered here- most people are the staunch conservative types who get nervous around anything unfamiliar, but I like novelty. (By the way if I never hear some acoustic singer-songwriter strumming suspended open chords playing alt-rock ballads again, it'll be too soon. This means you! You know who you are!) And bluegrass. Got a soft spot for bluegrass. I have nothing against cover bands in principle, but it's not like I'm going to pay money to see one.

Just because some-one can play the drums doesn't mean that they can teach them.
Too many drum instructors overcharge and under teach as the student stays an
unlearned player. I am totally different.

I am willing to travel to the student's residence, or they may come to mine.
I will not leave until the student has a full understanding of the material covered in each lesson.
There is not any charge for extra time spent. I care more about the student than a dollar bill.
I will assist the student in aquiring all necessary materials to get started.
You do not need a drumset to start learning the drums.
I've had some bad experiences with teachers before, and I vowed never to be like them, so I go the distance
in order to meet the students needs. I work with students from all walks of life and with various disabilities.
Patience, understanding, and being flexable are among the traits I possess.

LEWISTON – Calvary United Methodist Church will host the city’s “Tribute to Veterans” concert on Wednesday, November 11 at 7 p.m. The free one-hour concert will be held in the unique sanctuary of the downtown mission church at 59 Sabattus Street.

Composer, singer and pianist, Mitchell Clyde Thomas of Durham, will be joined by other Maine performers. Guitarists Paul Bright of Livermore Falls and Neil James of Auburn, bassist Jeff Munsonof Readfield, and soloists Caroline Young Coffin of Auburn and Katie St. Pierre of Minot will all participate. Earlier this year, the same ensemble presented a similar concert to celebrate the bicentennial of the birth of President Abraham Lincoln.

The concert is a tribute to veterans of all wars and will include a mix of patriotic songs, ballads from the Lincoln period, and folk songs from the time of the president’s youth in frontier America. Veterans and their families are invited to attend the concert and be seated in places of honor.

Jam band playing Allman Bros,, Grateful Dead and Old School Blues/R&B looking to complete a 7 piece. We have two guitars (one is a good slide player), bass, drums and a hammond organ player. We are playing a lot and trying to put this stuff together with a like minded group of guys. We ranges in age from 22-32. The music is all that matters but we do get paying gigs. We practice usually 3-5 nights a week unless gigs pop up (Hooray for paid practices). We are learning cover material in an attempt to take from them what we can, to write our own material in the very near future and come flying out with the first tight, two drummer 7 piece this state (or New England for that matter) has seen in decades. Driven is not the world for it.

Our current drummer is a fully jazz oriented kid, formally trained and plays much like Jamoie. We are looking for a backbeat guy who is a team player. Our current drummer is the nicest kid in the world and needs the other nicest kid in the world to team up with him.

A blues oriented keyboard player would be excellent as well.
Cheers and Happy Jammin'!!!

Club owner seeks Band for a new opportunity.
Our venue has 2 nights available and we would like to fill them with only one band.
We have Tuesday and Saturday nights available.

On Tuesdays we play a flat fee of $200 per band 4-piece minimum, 10 piece maximum. There are usually 10-20 people who show up on Tuesdays, but they drink alot, so we can still afford to pay a band. We'd prefer that you play ONLY the music that speaks to YOU, with all your years of training in composition, technique, theory, improvisation...for once play what YOU want to with no concern at all for your audience.

On Saturdays, we usually pay the door, but we pack the place. Our capacity is 350, so most bands gross $2000-3000. Everyone wants to dance and have a great time, so playing mostly tunes people know and like will be preferable...but you can certainly throw in an original from time to time...maybe you are a band that LIKES tunes OTHER people like, too! That would be ideal. There is certainly room for you to do covers with your own style and flavor, change up the solos a bit, switch vocals, add harmonies that aren't in the originals, stretch out a tune if the dance floor is packed....use your judgment from years of experience playing in front of people and not just in your mom's basement. Above all, the sound, groove and feeling of the band are the most important items in getting hired BACK to play again and again. (It might also help if you can spell correctly for your advertising and posters, etc).

If you take the gig, you have to play both nights. Everyone who plays on Tuesdays, is broken up or disbanded within 8 months.
I think the vitriol comes here: cover bands are lazy. First, its an easy road -- all you need is a bunch of barflies a large percentage of which who come for the booze. BOOM there's your crowd. The only bands lazier in the state are post-hardcore and/or screamo bands...riding the coattails of the tweens and college-aged hipsters. The cover bands just go for the older audience.

Second, compare the amount of time it takes for original composition vs how much time it takes to download guitar tab/sheet music and learn it.

I get completely frustrated at the whiny piss-ants on this forum sometimes. You have one guy bitching that cover bands have no talent you have the other guy saying there is no money in original bands when the fact is both of you are ignorant people. I must say that typically the people who say that cover bands suck are the ones that sit around in a smoke filled room with the same 4 people listening too and playing death metal no one cares about with the exception of the same 10 people that come and see you at your bands shows. I am in an original band that goes out and enjoys watching cover bands not because I like all of the music but because it creates a more interesting and fun environment than 90% of the local bands. Now there are original bands that really catch my eye and maybe it isn’t for the music but for the way they grab the crowd and their stage presence. The point of the story is simply this; there is a lot of talent in playing your own music as there is in playing someone else’s music and there is a demand for both types even in Maine. But don’t sit on this forum and bash others for something you don’t understand.

If you can play a violin or cello that would be good too, but if not can play parts similar on the keys. The music is pretty much catchy ditties with a lot of synths, I'm a huge Rentals fan as is evident in the tunes I'm coming up with. Chances are we'd be switching up here and there. The goal is to make music that's fun to play, catchy and pleasant to listen to. Influences are the Rentals, Mr. Bungle, Brian Wilson, Weezer, Nirvana, and Moog synthesizers.

I am looking for a bunch of musicians to incorporate into my solo project, All the Same. Songs are mostly written, I just need some sick musicians to make up cool parts. All the Same is a somewhat experimental project, often straying from the classic verse/chorus/verse structure and I IV V progressions. I am a music student at USM, and would like to work with serious musicians of sufficient talent. Also, I would love to have musicians that like singing harmonies. Personally, I play rhythm guitar and sing.
Yeah, because that has worked so well for the hundreds of other Maine bands wishing to break out of Maine with their crappy originals. If you don't mind playing for $200 a night with 5 other bands that share gear, all the power to ya. Kudos. I gave that up when I was 19.

I play in a tribute band that has performed from NJ to New Brunswick. All I can say is: big venues, production provided, WAY more cash than an original band, nice accommodations, green rooms, etc.

Go ahead and keep writing originals, if it works for you, great!

I'll be thinking of you when I'm performing on stage at the Santo Domingo Hard Rock Cafe in December!

We are fairly somewhat but not exceptionally talented and are mostly focused on our kids and jobs but still want to make some music and have some fun and have an excuse to buy more instruments and equipment. We have all played in bands in the past but before the Internets were invented so they don't show up on the Googles. We are young enough to be into the Stones but not quite old enough to be passing them yet.
Our influences are Grateful Dead, Little Feat, Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Jack Johnson, The Who, The Band, Bonnie Raitt, The Beatles, Norah Jones, Grace Potter, so forth.
We have guitar, drums, keyboards, vocals. We need a bass player and would consider a lead guitarist. Dust it off. Life is not over. We need you. We need each other.
First of all, I appreciate your zest for playing and I understand the need to be heard, but you shouldn't play for free. You should always expect some type of compensation for playing because you do put time and effort into your craft. At first you need to take whatever people will give you, but don't take nothing. The biggest problem for musicians is getting paid because people have the mentality that musicians should play for free. Ultimately, you are shooting yourself and all other musicians in the foot by offering your services for free. What you should do is shop your music around to other bands in your genre and see if you can get an opening slot for them.
I am probably not good enough yet for drumming gigs. I have 18 years of on stage work, production, sound tech and playing saxophone. Lets get something going! At the very least it'll be fun.
