A Penobsot dancer's drum for use in ritual dances. This drum dates to circa 1800 and this form was borrowed directly from the early Colonists. Obviously, the Penobscot Nation had been making various drums for millenia, but this form is a direct interpretation of drums seen in many Patriotic paintings from the War of Independenc.
The body of the drum is a wooden cylinder which was painted in a traditional Mustard Ochre, made from taking iron rich sand and grinding it to a fine powder, infusing it with animal fat and then heating it which produced this lovely color. The other two colors of brown and black were made from berries and charcoal. The overall effect was the banding of these colors on the cylinder then covering it with deerhide and tying it tight with deer sinew.
These were then given to the dancers to beat on with sticks or by hand as he ritual dances were performed.
This amzing little drum is only 6" in diameer and 6" tall.
A great piece of antiquity to add to your collection. itis in perfect condition and has no restorations.
