12 inch diameter, silver, Commemorative Tray for the Bermuda Race in 1960, showing the course, with dated positions along the route, of the Yacht "JAVA", as engraved in the lower left corner of the tray. The 1960 running of the Bermuda Race was notable for the vicious storm that came up during the race while the yachts were in the Gulf Stream, a bad place to be in a storm, especially if the winds are contrary to the flow of the Gulf Stream, which produced mountainous waves. Several yachts were dis-masted, crew members were washed overboard, some yachts lost their rudders, as did JAVA, partially.

Included, as a companion piece to this tray, is the book A BERTH TO BERMUDA by Bill Robinson (published in 1961 by D. Van Nostrand Company, Inc.), a crew member on another of the participant yachts, Barlovento II, a 72 foot steel ketch owned by P.S. duPont. This book, which includes two photos of JAVA, tells the story of the race from the point of view of the crew of Barlovento II, but also has many photos of the other participating yachts, as well as of the goings-on ashore after the race.

If ad's up, it's available.
