For sale is a pair of Allison Acoustics Allison:One Speakers in restored condition. The A1 is a unique, exciting design from the 1970’s, created by Roy Allison, formerly of Acoustic Research and considered one of the greatest speaker designers of all time.
Each A1 features two 10” acoustic suspension woofers, two 3.5” domed midranges, and two 1” domed tweeters. The prism cabinet shape combined with the wide dispersion drivers give these speakers 180 degree flat acoustic power output. Bass response rolls off -3db at 35.5hz, so these speakers are nearly full range. The A1 can be driven down to 20hz with the use of an Allison Electronic Subwoofer.
All woofers were refoamed. All capacitors replaced. The ABS plastic grills are present and in great shape (Allison grills are fragile) with very few cracks. Grills were spray painted flat black to hide paint stains from a previous owner.
One cabinet has a small amount of water damage resulting in a small area of degraded MDF below one woofer (see photos). This does not affect cabinet integrity or sound. The top veneer of the same cabinet has a moderate water ring.
The A1 was designed to have its back placed against a wall (within 3”) for proper bass response. Also for proper response, the speakers should have two feet of clearance on either side (measured from the center of the cabinet). Beyond these placement rules, placement is actually quite flexible. Allison encouraged use on the same wall, adjacent walls, or even opposing walls. I have been using them in an opposing wall, direct/reflecting setup.
The sound from these is terrific, rivaling in design and sound the AR-LST, a historic and premium speaker. The wide dispersion drivers combined with the cabinet design spread flat frequency response sound over the listening space. The result is a big, live sound.
These are located in Bath, ME. Can be heard before our wading. Also willing to deliver within 20 miles or the Portland area for free. Asking $750
