Lots of History and a great piece of Art. Three Part Wall Mount Carrara Marble Commemorative Plaque salvaged from a Portland, Maine church, with allegorical figure for Resurrection above the names George S. Hunt and Augusta M. Hunt. This is signed Frederick Shaw with an 1892 Patent Date. Shaw developed a method called translucent sculpture, whereby he used thin slabs of marble to create a window effect within a building. Experimenting with varying thicknesses, he achieved highlights and shadows that many people found astonishing...."the whole mass of marble being suffused with a rich golden colour produced by the rays of light penetrating through it and bringing out the design with exquisite life-likeness".
I believe this was carved in or around 1932 when she passed.
George Smith Hunt (1829-1896) was a major importer of sugar and exporter of lumber in Maine. This trade with the Caribbean is how he made his fortune. He was president of the Forest City Sugar Refining Company. George Hunt passed away in 1896 in the office of Charles F. Libby in Portland, Maine.
Augusta Merrill (Barstow) Hunt (1842-1932) known as the "first woman to vote in Maine", was a notable activist of her time. She was President of The Home for Aged Women, the Ladies' History Club and, most importantly, the Women's Christian Temperance Union. The union, known mostly for its pursuit of the abolition of alcohol was also involved in women's rights and the suffragette movement. Under her management the organization expanded its sights and was instrumental in movements to have women elected to school boards, creating day cares and free kindergartens, and introducing female guards to co-ed prisons. In addition she and her committees were instrumental in getting a bill passed in Maine that gave rights to mothers - rights regarding the "care and guardianship," in equality with their husbands, of their children.
