Hood Brook Honeybees, home of the "Saving the Honeybees Initiative" is currently seeking 1 to 3 volunteers who are nature lovers and have an interest in honeybees and becoming a beekeeper. You will assist in apiary activities including handling various equipment, inspecting beehives, adding and/or removing honey supers, and other related work at the apiary.
Commitment: 1 to 2 days every two weeks (Flexible scheduling, weather permitting)
Are you fascinated by honeybees? Want to learn how to sustainably manage hives, read a brood frame, and handle bees with confidence—without the upfront cost of setting up your own apiary?
What You’ll Learn & Do:
• Hive Inspections: Learn to spot the queen, assess brood health, identify honey/pollen reserves, and monitor colony behavior.
• Apiary Management: Assist with basic hive maintenance, reversing boxes, preparing for nectar flows, and sustainable, chemical-free hive care.
• Gear & Safety: Learn the right way to suit up, light a smoker, and move calmly through a busy apiary.
What We’re Looking For:
• Reliability & Consistency: Bees don't wait! We need someone who can reliably commit to a couple of days every two weeks.
• Calm Under Pressure: Bees can sense energy. A patient, deliberate, and calm demeanor is a must.
• Physical Fitness: Beekeeping involves outdoor work in the summer heat and lifting heavy wooden hive boxes (up to 50 lbs).
• Respect for Safety: You must be comfortable working around thousands of stinging insects and willing to strictly follow safety protocols.
What’s Provided:
• Full protective gear/bee suit will be provided for your use during sessions.
• Intensive, one-on-one mentorship and practical knowledge from a certified beekeeper.
How to Apply:
